The contributory healthcare scheme of Kano state has been described as the best in the country with more than 400,000 enrollees.

This was made known by the Ag. Executive Secretary of Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Muhammad Dahiru Shehu, in a weekly Hausa live programme titled Ranar Wanka of Africa Independent Television (AIT), Kano.

The plan Kano state government has over the scheme is to involve all categories of people. There is special plan for vulnerable people. Also arrangement is under way to accommodate pensioners and non-working category of the state. With this noble feat, Kano will, in near future, reach the universal health coverage, a status world is currently struggling to attain, Dr. Shehu asserted.

The acting ES said that the Board is enjoying exclusive attention of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in the course of discharging its responsibilities, adding that the governor has never turned down Boards requests because of his passion to improve the health status of people of the state.

Dr. Shehu stated that with almost 40 hospitals under its supervision scattered across 14 zones, government gives the Board free hand to handle its affairs like staff recruitment, discipline, promotion, training, etc without interference, stressing that despite economic crunch Governor Ganduje accords special consideration to Boards needs.

Government initiated free health programmes in the state owned hospitals such as free medications and surgery for pregnant women, free medication for children under five years, etc. The accomplishment that attracted some development partners like MNCH2 and CHAI to contribute their quota for the sustainability of the programme, the Ag. ES explained cheerfully.     

He noted that more than 300 hospitals have been renovated while some were upgraded and equipped with modern equipment by the Ganduje administration so that demands of health services of people would be met diligently, adding that state-of-the-art equipment like the 1.5 Tesler MRI machine which is the second in the country were procured by Dr. Ganduje in his zeal to promote health of people of the state.

Dr. Shehu disclosed that recently Governor Ganduje instructed for the upgrade of four general hospitals in the local governments where the newly emirates were created and additional ambulances were given to the Board for further distribution to zonal general hospitals while tricycle ambulances were stationed at the 44 LGs to cater for the remote areas where ambulance cannot enter so that the patients would be conveyed to hospitals with ease.

Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Hospital has been upgraded to Teaching Hospital in order to serve as a training ground for medical students of Yusuf Maitama Sule University while Magwan storey building will become the varsitys faculty of medicine. All is this was the effort of His Excellency to ensure Kano state is producing enough medical doctors that will serve people accordingly, the Ag. Executive Secretary buttressed.

He then enjoined people of the state to give maximum cooperation to Governor Ganduje in his efforts to take Kano state to the next level of development.
