“Primary and post-primary education is now free and compulsory. Education from primary up to tertiary institutions for the physically challenged people is also free. Scholarships disbursement for our students will be reviewed upward. Tertiary education will be highly subsidised.”
He said “…detailed policy guidelines from government for the implementation of the free education policy will be provided in due course.”
The statement was made by governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in his acceptance speech after taking Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance, during his swearing-in administered by the State Chief Judge, His Lordship Nuraddeen Sagir Umar, held at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Wednesday 29th, May.
In what he describes as Agenda for Next Level, governor Ganduje discloses that, he is determined to leave a legacy of prosperous state where all sectors of the state would develop sustainably.
He maintained that he is committed to the building and consolidation of a state in which there should be effective health and educational system, a flourishing agriculture and agribusiness sector, integrated rural development, renewed rural development, enhanced security and peace to bolster economic growth and development.
“As Allah destined that, I would be a second term governor from today, this administration will come up with more people-oriented policies and programmes,” he said.
While acknowledging that, elections time was over he promised to carry all along in his second term in office, emphasising that, “Election time is now over. It is now time for governance. No matter your political inclination, we are carrying all along. I am a father to all as a governor of Kano state.”
Ganduje challenged that his last four years proved that his vision and administration are productive. “We are putting more efforts this time around.”
Before going to other sectors of the society, Ganduje said “I took seven Oaths in my life. I took three Oaths when serving as Commissioner, two Oaths as Deputy Governor, one as first term governor and I am taking the seventh Oath today as my second term governor.”
He said because of this and many other factors, he would try his possible to see that he deliver well as he did in the past, adding that, “I am using this opportunity to say that I forgive all. I will also do my best to serve all.”
In the area of security he said he would do more to see to the rehabilitation and empowerment of youth, especially the unemployed ones.
All sectors, like agriculture would be enriched to comply with the modern day development, revealing that, “The sum of $500m has been earmarked and will be committed for the implementation of 5-year Development Plan for the agricultural sector.”
The sum according to him, would be for the execution of State Pastoral Development Project, which seeks to contribute to poverty reduction “..and strengthening food and nutrition security of vulnerable population in the state through sustainable development of livestock and crop selected value chain,” he explained.
On the fight against corruption Ganduje reiterated that, despite the effort of fighting corruption by the state government,
“…the corruption is fighting back, nonetheless this will not shift our focus in maintaining the attitudes of zero tolerance which led us to prosecute some high ranking officials and some are still under investigation and when completed the matter will be taken to court for adjudication,” he explained.
Governor Ganduje commended many people for their contribution towards the successful completion of his first tenure in office.
He appreciated the Speaker Kano State House of Assembly, Distinguished Senators and members of the House of Representatives.
Adding that, “Let me use this opportunity also to appreciate my Deputy Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who stood by our mandate through thick and thin.
I have to thank and appreciate the State Chief Judge and the State Grand Khadi for their support and maintaining the integrity of Kano judiciary. I also thank the good people of Kano state for the confidence reposed in our party. We shall not disappoint you.”
